Thai government urged to observe Global Goals
BANGKOK, January 8 (TNA) - The Thai government should enforce the traffic laws based on the Global Goals in order to reduce and curb road accidents and casualties all the time, not just during festiivals.
Nikorn Chamnong, who leads a Thai safety club, has raised the proposal, noting that the Global Goals include the Safety System for land transport to save the life of people, especially children and youngsters.
"The Thai government should introduce new traffic measures as those implemented by foreign countries based on the UN Global Goals to save the life of land commuters, especially children and youngsters, through more information dissemination on road safety for public learning", Nikorn said.
Nikorn revealed that his club will soon send a letter to the Ministry of Education and the Department of Land Transport, under the Ministry of Transport, to seek their cooperation on the dissemination and implementation of road safety measures, as agreed in a tripartite memorandum of understanding (MOU), including those on driving speed limits, particularly in community areas, and on speed detections.
According to the Thai safety club leader, Thailand is now listed among the world's most cases of road accidents and casualties by the World Atlas website and the World Health Organization (WHO), the latter of which has pointed out there are about 66 road fatalities in Thailand daily, affecting the Thai tourism and economy to some extent.
The move by the Thai safety club followed its assessment that the road fatalities of 423 totally nationwide during the recent seven-day New Year holidays were over 10 per cent higher that the average New Year dealth toll over the past five years and, thus, need immediate actions to reduce and curb road accidents and casualties in the country.
