Aussies shipbuilder starts operations in Vung Tau
Vung Tau (VNA) - The Western Australian shipbuilder Strategic Marine company on Feb. 24 opened its modern shipyard in the southern coastal province of Ba Ria-Vung Tau following 18 months of construction.
"I'm very happy to see our dream has turned into a reality," chairman Mark Newbold
said in his opening speech. "This is nothing less than a fully operational
shipyard with a burgeoning order book that will keep us busy into the future."
"The Vietnamese facility gives us the ability to build large, technologically
advanced steel vessels as well as crew boats, cargo vessels, tankers and tugs," he
added.
The 25 million USD shipyard covers an area of 136,000sq.m in the Dong Xuyen
Industrial Zone in Vung Tau city.
It has nearly 20,000sq.m of machinery and workshop space, comprising five large
fabrications and five specialist workshops.
A further 30,000sq.m has been given over to a heavy load laydown area and the
yard's three slipways are capable of handling the construction of vessels up to
200m long and 60m wide, with a tonnage of 15,000 tonnes.
It is also equipped with more than 20 overhead gantry cranes which range in size
from five to 20 tonnes and two 200-tonne crawler cranes.
The yard has won more than 91.3 million USD in orders and has completed
construction of the 103m x 50m steel pontoon base for the Australian Marine
Complex's 59.5 million USD Floating Dry Dock, which was shipped to Western
Australia late last year.
The most recent contract worth 1.9 million USD is to extend a floating dry dock
for major shipbuilder STX Europe.
The fully functioning facility is able to build steel and aluminum vessels and
employs more than 1,100 local workers.
At the opening ceremony, the company announced its training programme for 55
Vietnamese who will take a two-year course in a range of specialised industrial
skills.
With four shipyards operating in Vietnam , Western Australia , Singapore and
Mexico , the Strategic Marine has 140 vessels contracted with a value of over 360
million USD.
The construction follows the Vietnamese Government's policy for the shipbuilding
industry, which it has designated as one of its priority sectors, having earmarked
750 million USD for development.
Under the 2002-10 Shipbuilding Industry Development Programme, the government is
aiming to have exported 5 billion USD worth of ships by 2010.
With more than 60 shipbuilding and repair yards in Vietnam , the government
aims to expand capacity to container ships, cargo ships and oil tankers of 100,000
tonnes as well as repairing and refitting ships of 400,000 tonnes.-Enditem
