Aso to order large-scale stimulus plan in early March

TOKYO, Feb. 26 Kyodo - Prime Minister Taro Aso decided Thursday that he will call for a large-scale
economic stimulus plan in early March following passage by the Diet of a bill
for a second supplementary budget for fiscal 2008, sources close to the prime
minister said.

Aso has decided on the timing for ordering the massive stimulus package as the
fiscal 2009 budget is set to clear the House of Representatives on Friday,
making it certain it will be enacted by the end of the current fiscal year on
March 31.
The government and the ruling coalition have started studying tax breaks to
spur sluggish consumer spending as part of the envisioned stimulus plan,
sources familiar with the matter said.
The faltering state of the Japanese economy is partly attributable to sagging
private consumption.
