Top sports tribunal to set up temporary offices at PyeongChang Winter Olympics

PYEONGCHANG, South Korea, Jan. 27 (Yonhap) -- The world's top sports tribunal announced Saturday it will operate two temporary offices on the site of the 2018 Winter Olympics in South Korea. The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) said it will open the CAS Ad Hoc Division and CAS Anti-Doping Division in PyeongChang, the host of the Feb. 9-25 Winter Games. They will be in operation from Jan. 30 to Feb. 25 at the Tower Condominium at Yongpyong Alpine Centre, an alpine skiing venue. The CAS has been operating Ad Hoc Divisions at every Summer and Winter Olympics since 1996. The PyeongChang Ad Hoc Division will resolve any legal disputes that arise during the PyeongChang Games, it said. "The CAS Ad Hoc Division will provide participants in the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympic Games with free access to dispute resolution services that are conducted within a timeframe consistent with the competition schedule," the CAS said in its statement. Michael Lenard, vice president of the International Council of Arbitration for Sport (ICAS) and a CAS board member, will be the Ad Hoc Division's president during the PyeongChang Olympics. South Korean lawyer Park Jin-won will be one of nine arbitrators, all of whom are experienced laywers, judges or professors specializing in sports law and arbitration. The CAS Anti-Doping Division will handle doping-related matters. The CAS said this is the second time it has set up such a division, the first being at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Summer Olympics. Swiss Supreme Court Judge Ivo Eusebio will be its president. jeeho@yna.co.kr (END)
