Laos, Brunei to expand ties in health sector

(KPL) Dr Ponmek Dalaloy, Minister of Public Health paid a courtesy call to Brunei Minister of Health Pehin Orang Kaya Indera Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Suyoi Hj Osman recently. This was a part of working visit to the Brunei Darussalam of the Mr. Ponmek Dalaloy and his delegation which aimed at exploring bilateral cooperation opportunities as well as enhancing relations between both ministries.
Following the courtesy call, a meeting between both parties took place at the Ministry of Health to discuss bilateral cooperation in the field of health which include discussions on prospective exchange on information, experience and professional exchange programmes.
An overview presentation of Brunei’s healthcare delivery system was later presented by Deputy Health Permanent Secretary (Professional and Technical) Datin Paduka Dr Hjh Intan Hj Salleh. In her presentation, Datin Paduka Dr Hjh Intan stated that there are 393 doctors, 81 dentists, 42 pharmacists, 1,915 nurses working in the government and the private sector, as of 2008.
The deputy permanent secretary also shared with the delegates the challenges faced by the ministry which include financial pressure on healthcare system, technological revolution, epidemiological transition of diseases and demographic transition.
The Laos delegation include the minister’s wife, Bauakco Dalaloy, deputy director of cabinet in-charge of foreign relations, Dr Nao Boutta, senior officer of Department of Planning and Budgeting Dr Founkham Rattanavong and Dr Chandavone Phoxay, secretary to the minister.Also present at the courtesy call were Deputy Minister Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Paduka Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah as well as the permanent and deputy permanent secretaries at the ministry.
Pehin Dato Hj Suyoi previously visited Laos in March last year on an invitation by Health Minister Dr Dalaloy.
The two-day visit ends with a cruise around Kampong Ayer and a visit to Sengkurong Silver Jubilee Health Centre before departing Brunei.
