Measures to protect elephants, wandering on road
PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN, Feb 24 (TNA) – The Kaeng Krachan National Park has measures to prevent elephants, roaming on the road from being hit by vehicles at night.
Park officials will patrol and monitor if elephants appear on the road to prevent the accident after an elephant was struck by a pick-up truck yesterday at Khao Ang Ruenai Wildlife Sanctuary.
Mana Permpoon, head of the conservation area of the Kaeng Krachan national park said that from evening to dawn, wild elephants are spotted roaming on Hua Hin- Pa La-u Road at the kilometre markers 16-19 in Hua Hin district of Prachuap Khiri Khan province.
They are at risk of being hit by vehicles. He ordered officials to patrol the road and to erect warning signs for drivers to take extra care.
Drivers are banned from using horn to chase elephants and feeding the animals on the roadside.
Line Group is opened for local residents to inform officials if they find elephants roaming on the road, so officials can help push them back into the forest, Mr Mana said.
The national park is discussing with other agencies to find effective measures for the long-tern solutions. Initially, roadside landscape will be improved to increase visibility at night. (TNA)
