Fish imported from Fukushima is safe
BANGKOK, March 12 (TNA) -- The Fisheries Department confirmed that they have found no traces of radiation in the 2nd batch of fish delivered from Japan's Fukushima prefecture.
The Fisheries Department revealed that they have picked the samples from the 2nd lot of fish imported from Fukushima said sent them to Office for Atoms for Peace to test.
Ms Umaporn Pimolbutr, the deputy director-general of the Fisheries Department, revealed that a seafood importer notified them of the arrival of the 2nd delivery of fish from Fukushima on March 9. These were made up of 27.5 kg of flounder and 4.5 kg of sole.
Officials were sent to Suvarnabhum Airport to check the delivery and took samples to send to the Office of Atoms for Peace for testing. The importer was asked not to distribute the fish until the test results were released by the Office of Atoms for Energy.
On March 12, the Fisheries received confirmation that the samples were found to have minimal contaminants well below international standards and clean the batch for distribution. The World Health Organisation specifies that Cesium contamination must be not exceed 500 Becquerel/kg.
The first batch of 30kg of Hirame or Flatfish delivered from Fukushima was cleared by the Fisheries Department and Food and Drug Administration on March 2.
It was the Fukushima's first fish export since 2011 nuclear disaster.
Tests indicated no contaminants and the batch of fish was imported through the proper channels and complied with all Fisheries Department and Food and Drug Administration guidelines. (TNA)
