Almost 100 dummy bombs discovered underground in Bangkok

BANGKOK, March 19 (TNA) – Construction workers discovered 98 dummy bombs from the Second World War era, buried one metre underground in Sang Hee Bridge area. The Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists were rushed to the scene at the construction site on Ratchawithi Road near the Krung Thon or Sang Hee Bridge for inspection after they were alerted by workers at the site. Deputy national police chief Srivara Rangsibrahmanakul said the EOD team confirmed that these are 25-pound BDU-33 non-explosive ordnance. Each is more than 45 years old and about one foot and a half long. This kind of device is not used by Thai military but it is presumed to be used in the US., he said. The BDU-33 is used in training to simulate free fall aerial bomb release. The EOD experts also checked nearby areas for safety reasons. Meanwhile, the land owner, Kraithip Krairuek arrived at the site, saying the area is his old family home. The spot, where the bombs were found is used to be a pond. He is building a small department store on the land. (TNA)
