Abdullah Bin Zayed leads UAE delegation to Arab League’s Council session
CAIRO, March 4, 2009 (WAM) - UAE Foreign Minister H.H Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed is leading the UAE delegation to the 131st session of the Arab League's Council which started here Tuesday to discuss various issued and the latest developments in the Arab world and the Middle East.
Foreign Ministers of 21 Arab countries took part in the session which was chaired by Sudanese Foreign Minister Ali Karti.
In his opening speech, Karti urged for a unified Arab position under the initiative launched by King H.M Abdullah Bin Abdul Aziz of Saudi Arabia. He further stressed on efforts by Sudan, as the current president of the session, to bridge inter-Arab divisions.
Unless they join forces and close their ranks, Arabs including Palestinians, Karti added, would achieve none of their goals.
Karti called for the adoption of "Arab Reconciliation" as the theme of the current AL's session.
He further quoted Saudi King Abdullah as saying at the latest Arab Summit in Kuwait "the Arab peace initiative will not remain on the table forever." But he noted the need for initiating contacts between Arabs and the new U.S administration for stabilizing the region.
Karti also noted that the recent Syrian-Saudi rapprochement under the umbrella of the Arab League had been instrumental in achieving reconciliation in Lebanon. He also hailed efforts by Qatar and Arab-African commission to solve the issue of Darfur.
For his part, Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Saud Al-Faisal stressed that Arab and Palestinian reconciliation would only backed by a unified and common vision of issues with immediate impact on pan-Arab security, namely Arab-Israeli conflict, Iran's nuclear programme, Security of the Arabian Gulf as well as the intervention of non-Arab parties in Iraq, Palestine and Lebanon.
Calling for a unified Arab approach to relations with the new Obama-led U.S administration and its readiness for tackling the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the Saudi foreign minister warned against the consequences of abandoning the Arab peace initiative thus inflicting what he called "self-harm" due to the absence of a better alternative.
He further criticized Israel's adamant rejection of the Arab peace initiative and the requirement of the peace process. This Israeli position, Al-Faisal said, has led to an increasing feeling of disappointment and to the subsequent calls for abandoning the initiative without having a readily available strategy to tackle the conflict.
The Arab foreign ministers are expected to tackle a number of topics related to regional issues, particularly the inter-Palestinian reconciliation and relations among Arab countries.
They are also likely to discuss measures to be taken if the International Criminal Court (ICC) issues an arrest warrant against Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir.
