List of occupations reserved for Thais is to be finalized soon

BANGKOK, April 20 (TNA) -- Labour authorities are about to finalize the list of occupations that migrants will be banned from doing. Jarin Jakkapak, permanent secretary for labour, said labour officials had their third meeting to discuss the list with concerned parties including representatives of governmental organizations, independent organizations, educational institutions, employers, professional organizations and the private sector. Mr Jarin said the meeting could be a final session of opinion surveys before the conclusion of the list of occupations reserved for Thai people. In past sessions, labour authorities needed more opinions on a proposal to allow migrant workers to be bricklayers, carpenters and labourers and to make industrial products that did not require high skills, he said. There were also proposals to allow migrants to be employed to sell goods, make Thai handicrafts and be tour guides. Relevant authorities earlier proposed to prohibit migrant workers from being masseuses, security guards and models aged under 18 years old. Mr Jarin said the list would be imposed within June and it would suit present situations and minimize negative impacts. (TNA)
