Warning against investment in digital currencies

BANGKOK, April 28 (TNA) -- Governor of Bank of Thailand (BoT) Veerathai Santiprabhob has expressed concerns on an investment in digital currencies which offer high interest rates to investors, saying that the investment is surrounded with high risk and is similar to collapsed pyramid investment scheme before the 2nd World War. Mr Veerathai said he had met deputy national police chief Police General Wirachai Songmetta on the issue in which many people have become preyed. At least four responsible government agencies including the Finance Ministry, BoT, the Securities and Exchange Commission, and the Anti-Money Laundering Office have earlier discussed and exchange information on investment in digital currencies which are highly volatile and risky. So far, the Thai government has not issued additional laws to control the investment while the four government agencies are monitoring the investment situation closely. The Finance Ministry has earlier warned that extreme care must be exercised when dealing with digital currencies which are volatile and risky. (END)
