Thailand confirms support for peace in Rakhine

BANGKOK, May 9 (TNA) -- The newly appointed Myanmar ambassador to Thailand met Deputy Prime Minister/Defence Minister Prawit Wongsuwon who assured on the occasion that Thailand was supporting peace processes in the Myanmar state of Rakhine. Defence spokesman Kongcheep Tantrawanit said Ambassador U Myo Myint Than called on Gen Prawit at the Defence Ministry and both sides discussed the development of bilateral cooperation and relations. The areas of cooperation cover labour, refugee repatriation, peace restoration in Rakhine, demarcation, and the development of permanent border crossings. Gen Prawit emphasized Thailand’s readiness to support peace processes in Rakhine by sharing its knowledge on economic and social development and security affairs with Myanmar, Lt Gen Kongcheep said. The ambassador expressed gratitude towards Thailand’s understanding on situations in Myanmar and said the understanding was key to good bilateral ties, he said. (TNA)
