Thai temples will celebrate ‘Vesak Day’ worldwide
BANGKOK, May 19 (TNA) -- The Thai government has asked Buddhist temples in Thailand and oversea to organise activities to mark this year ‘Vesak Day’ which falls on May 29, said Minister attached to the Prime Minister's Office Minister Suwaphan Tanyuvardhana.
The upcoming celebrations will be held between May 24-30, said Mr Suwaphan.
In Bangkok, it will be organised at Buddha Monthon, or Buddhist Park in Nakhon Pathom province, and at the Mahachulalongkornrajavidyalaya University in the former capital of Ayutthaya province.
Thai Buddhist temples in the overseas will also organise religious activities to mark the ‘Vesak Day’ which is also recognised by the United Nations in 1999 as the most sacred day to millions of Buddhists around the world.
‘Vesak’, the Day of the Full Moon in the month of May, marks the day in the year 623 BC that the Lord Buddha was born, the Day that he attained enlightenment and the Day that the Lord Buddha in his eightieth year passed away. (TNA)
