New Bt42 bn passenger terminal approved for Suvarnabhumi airport
BANGKOK, June 21 (TNA) – The board of Airports of Thailand Plc (AOT) approved a 42-billion-baht project to build a new passenger terminal at Suvarnabhumi airport.
The project is aimed at meeting air traffic demand at the country’s main airport. AOT expects the airport to serve 65 million passengers this year and 68 million next year while its past project for Suvarnabhumi was designed to raise its capacity to only 60 million passengers yearly.
The new and second passenger terminal of Suvarnabhumi airport was designed to handle 30 million passengers per year and it would meet the Transport Ministry’s plan to raise the combined capacity of Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports to 90 million passengers next year and 120 million in 2021. The expansion will also serve the Eastern Economic Corridor project of the government.
The new passenger terminal was designed to cover a combined area of 348,000 square metres and be connected with 14 aircraft parking bays. The project also includes an airport multiplex building covering 84,000 square metres, new car parks to serve up to 3,500 vehicles, an internal electric railway.
The construction was expected to begin next year and be completed in 2021. (TNA)
