UAE ranks first among Arab countries on internet users rate, first worldwide on mobile telephone call cost
The UAE ranked first among Arab countries inn internet users rate, international internet bandwidth rate, the importance of ICT to government vision of the future, personal computers rate, ICT use and government efficiency; e-government readiness index, government prioritisation of ICT, laws relating to ICT, and the number of telephone lines, according to The Global Information Technology Report 2007 - 2008, released by the World Economic Forum based on the estimates of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU).
The UAE also ranked second among the Arab countries on: high-speed monthly broadband subscription, the lowest cost of broadband, the availability of government online services, and secure internet servers. It ranked third on the total broadband and Internet subscribers rate.
Internationally, the UAE ranked first worldwide on the cost of mobile telephone call (along with Egypt, Italy and Hong Kong), and on residential monthly telephone subscription. In other cases, the UAE ranked worldwide as follows: fourth on the importance of ICT to government vision of the future, sixth on government success in ICT promotion, seventh on government prioritization of ICT, ninth on ICT use and government efficiency, 10th on mobile telephone subscribers rate, 10th on business telephone connection charge, and 14th on residential telephone connection charge.
"The report stated the UAE strengths in comparison to all the members of the ITU worldwide, with respect to the national economy's 7 best ranks. Hence, the outcome resulted in the fact that the UAE first 7 economic strengths in the ICT sector are the residential monthly telephone subscription, business monthly telephone subscription, the cost of mobile telephone call, the importance of ICT to government vision of the future, the burden of government regulation, government success in ICT promotion, and government prioritization of ICT," said Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) director general and board member Mohammad Nasser Al Ghanem.
"The high rates the UAE scored internationally and on the Arab level with respect to the ICT services, reflect the rapid growth of the UAE ICT sector, caused mostly by introducing competition, international best practices and governance," Al Ghanem said.
