AOT and EU to set up joint cargo checkpoint at Suvarnabhumi airport
BANGKOK, July 30 (TNA) – Airports of Thailand Plc together with the European Union are jointly setting up a cargo checkpoint at Suvarnabhumi airport to ensure Europe-bound exports meet European standards before delivery.
AOT chairman Prasong Poontaneat said AOT convinced the EU to establish the joint facility to examine exports to the EU to prevent duplicated export examination. The new facility was planned at Suvarnabhumi airport that would handle exports from the Eastern Economic Corridor.
The new checkpoint would be set up in the second-phase part of Suvarnabhumi airport and agricultural, commerce and industrial officials of Thailand and the EU would be deployed there to check exports based on European standards, Mr Prasong said.
“The cooperation will facilitate checks for contamination and substandard cargoes. If fresh goods are returned to Thailand, they will be damaged. If they are examined at Suvarnabhumi airport, rejected cargoes can be sent back to their owners right away. AOT expands the free zone from 600 rai to 723 rai for the purpose and expects to sign an agreement on the project with the EU in the near future,” AOT chairman said. (TNA)
