Thailand aims to reduce antibiotics in farming

BANGKOK, Aug 7 (TNA) – Five livestock agencies join hands to tackle overuse of antibiotics in farming for the safety of consumers. The Thai Veterinary Medical Association Under the Royal Patronage, the Livestock Development Department, the Veterinary Council of Thailand, the Thai Poultry Veterinary Association and the Thai Swine Veterinary Association jointly declared intention to control the use of antibiotics in farming at a seminar on Thai livestock products to be free from antibiotics. They aim at tackling antimicrobial resistance and reducing the use of antibiotics by 30 per cent in 2021. The Director-General of the Livestock Development Department, Sorawit Thanito, said antimicrobial resistance is the global concern. The policy on controlling the use of antibiotics in animal farming is included in the country’s strategic plan to address the problem. He said his Department is responsible for inspecting and regulating the whole process of livestock production. (TNA)
