CITY HALL WILL STUDY PROPOSAL TO PROHIBIT BIKES FROM ENTERING CITY CENTRE

KUALA LUMPUR, March 12 (Bernama) -- Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) will study
the Royal Malaysian Police's proposal to prohibit motorcycles from entering the
city centre during certain hours in a bid to combat crime.

Mayor Ahmad Fuad Ismail said although the proposal was initially rejected by
many quarters, it was being reconsidered following the increase in snatch theft
cases involving motorcyclists.

"We do not have a problem with the proposal but all aspects must be
scrutinised including its impact and the public's reaction upon implementation.

"The low-income group will definitely protest but if the
(snatch theft) cases were to become rampant, we do not have a choice but to try
it out. If we do not do so, then we will never know whether or not it will
work," he told reporters after attending a meeting with Deputy Inspector-General
of Police Ismail Omar, here, Wednesday.

Ahmad Fuad said, for a start, the proposal could be implemented in Jalan
Bukit Bintang as the area attracts not only tourists, but also criminals.

"I'm sure there will be many protests, but if the road is closed for
motorcyclists, they will not be burdened as there are alternative routes
available. After all, it is all for the safety of the public and the tourists,"
he said.
