Sharjah Biennial an Inspiration for Artists
The entire city of Sharjah will inspire artists for context-specific work, while cultural venues in the emirate will bustle with artistic activities for the next two months with the opening of the ninth edition of Sharjah Biennial (SB9) today according to a report in "Khaleej Times."
Sharjah’s Department of Culture and Information is hosting the event which will end on May 16, 2009.
The highly anticipated event is being held under the patronage of His Highness Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the UAE Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah.
Held under the auspices of the Sharjah Biennial Director Sheikha Hoor Al Qasimi, and overseen by renowned curators Isabel Carlos and Tarek Abou El Fetouh and led by artistic director Jack Persekian, the Sharjah Biennial (SB9) transcends central themes and pre-cast frameworks.
Instead it is exhibiting a wide range of works selected by an open invitation.
This year, the Biennial will furthermore host the symbolic Handover Ceremony of the torch of the Capital of Arab Culture from Damascus to Jerusalem, strengthening its position as the cultural capital of the region.
As well as exhibiting works by more than 80 artists from around the world, there are a number of events and programmes designed to support and nurture creativity of both local and visiting participants.
These events and programmes include the March Meeting, a networking opportunity for regional art institutions and the Artist-in-Residence Programme, a scheme that hosts visiting artists in Sharjah with the goal of developing context-related work.
It also comprises the exhibition programme titled ‘Provisions for the Future’ curated by Isabel Carlos, and the performance and film programme ‘Past of the Coming Days’ curated by Tarek Abou El Fetouh.
Many SB9 activities will take place across a number of venues, including the Sharjah Art Museum, the Heritage Area of Sharjah, and the Sharjah Museum for Contemporary Arab Art.
The Sharjah Biennial has, since its inauguration in 1993, served to connect artists, institutions and organisations and to foster artistic dialogue and exchange.
It ranks amongst the most established and prominent cultural events in the Middle East.
