US specialist operation team gives lives to Lao patients

(KPL) A team of orthopedic surgeons from the United States of America operated on the Lao people with backbone diseases for free and this was said by Dr Michael Hartman at a press conference held in the Lao Journalists’ Association on 16 March.
Team leader of this surgery team, Dr. Michael Hartman said that this was the fifth time that they were providing this free service to Laos.
He also said that for this trip, which is scheduled for a five day working stint, they would be operating on 10 patients who are suffering from the effects of serious backbone diseases and the real cost would be US$ 250,000. The operations are being carried out at Mittaphap hospital, Vientiane Capital from 16 to 20 March..
During the course of the operations, the surgeons would carry out surgery to remove the diseased portions of the bones and replace them with artificial bones.
Dr. Hartman said that the most difficult cases of bone operations are those patients who suffered injuries to their bones from road accident and those who suffered from bone tuberculosis.
This US surgical team, commencing their free service work in 2007, had already operated on 30 Lao patients and if their highly skilled service is translated into monetary terms it would be worth US$1 million. Financial support for their work came from a United States based company, Max-Tronic International.
The assistance from this medical team is to enhance the existing bilateral cooperation between Laos and the USA.
