DENMARK APPOINT AMBASSADOR TO ASEAN

JAKARTA, March 20 (Bernama) -- Denmark became the seventh EU member state to
appoint its Ambassador to ASEAN.

Borge Petersen, the Danish Ambassador to Indonesia, Thursday presented his
letter of appointment to Dr Surin Pitsuwan, Secretary-General of ASEAN.

ASEAN has in the past, cooperated with Denmark in the areas of transnational
crime and capacity building in the Trade in Goods, for new members of ASEAN.

"I hope Ambassador Petersen's appointment will bring about a new dimension
to ASEAN-Denmark relations. In particular, Denmark has a strong tradition of
sustainable development, social justice and humanitarian concerns," Surin said
in welcoming the appointment.

"There are a lot that can be shared and exchanged for the purpose of ASEAN
integration and community building," Surin said in a statement issued here.

The EU has announced that all 27 member states and the European Commission
will appoint Ambassadors to ASEAN.

So far, Belgium, Czech Republic, Finland, France, Germany, United Kingdom
and the European Commission have appointed their Ambassadors to ASEAN.
