MARITIME AGENCY TO IMPROVE SURVEILLANCE

PORT KLANG, March 21 (Bernama) -- The Malaysia Maritime Enforcement Agency will further improve the existing Malaysian Sea Surveillance System with three sets of Electro-optronics System laser cameras and two sets of Radio Direction Finder (RDF) System, which was installed early last month.

The agency's deputy director-general (operations), Rear Admiral Noor Aziz
Yunan, said the equipment which was installed at the country's remote sensor
sites would enhance the maritime security of the Straits of Malacca and the
Malaysian territorial waters.

"The RDF is capable of providing vital information to improve safety
measures relating to traffic, search and rescue operations, as well as detection
of communication involving piracy, smugglers and other related illegal
activities.

"Meanwhile, the Electro-optronics System allows long-range visual
surveillance, day and night," said Noor Aziz in his speech at the official
handing over ceremony of the equipment near here Friday.

The equipment was handed over by Minister of the Japanese Embassy in
Malaysia, Takashi Hoshiyama, to Noor Aziz.

Japan, among the world's top trading nations, with the bulk of its cargo
plying the busy straits, recently approved a first grant aid of RM13.8 million
to Malaysia for the improvement of equipment for maritime security enhancement
in Malaysian territorial waters. (US$1=RM3.65)

Meanwhile, Hoshiyama said the Straits of Malacca was one of the most
important shipping lanes from the economic and strategic perspectives, carrying
one-third of the world's sea trade.

"Over 200 vessels pass through the Straits per day, carrying about one-third
of the world's sea traded goods. Some 14,000 Japanese vessels rely on the
straits annually and 80 per cent of Japan's oil is shipped from the Middle East
via the straits," he added.

He said Japan had been assisting the agency by sending its coast guard
patrol vessels and airplanes to the Southeast Asian territorial waters.
