NAJIB WANTS TEAM WITH LOYALTY, INTEGRITY, CAPABILITY

KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 (Bernama) -- Najib Tun Razak has implored the United Malays National Organization (Umno) delegates to the party's general assembly to give him a team with traits of loyalty, integrity, ability and dedication to duty.

UMNO is a right-wing party and Malaysia's largest political party; a
founding member of the National Front (Barisan Nasional -BN) coalition, which
has been Malaysia's ruling political party since independence.

"Give me a line-up of leaders who are strong and able," he said when
simultaneously opening the Wanita Umno, Youth and Puteri delegates' conference
at Dewan Merdeka, PWTC, here, Tuesday night.

As such, he said, their collective duty as assembly delegates this year was
the heaviest in the history of Umno, because at stake this time was not just a
handful of party posts or the position or status of any individual.

"What is really at stake is the fate of Umno. The decision we collectively
make at this assembly will determine the future of our country; whether we
continue to shape and mould history, or just become an entry in the annals of
history."

Najib said Umno needed "leaders who are able and are themselves enablers,
who dare to change and are receptive to change, and who dare to criticise and
are willing to accept criticism".

He expressed hope that he would receive the same support and cooperation
from all delegates and members when he assumes the party presidency.

"I also believe that the same support will be given to the new Umno deputy
president who will be elected soon.

"I strongly believe that if we continue to be united and work hand in hand,
there will be no burden we cannot carry and no hurdle we cannot surmount as we
strive together to chart the future," he said.

Najib said he felt overwhelmed tonight, standing before the Wanita, Youth
and Puteri delegates for the last time as party deputy president to
simultaneously open the conference of the three party wings.

"Looking back at my own political journey, it has been more than 33 years
that I have been with the Umno wings when we converge for the general assembly.

"I am extremely moved by the notion that I have been entrusted with the
faith and confidence of the grassroots to lead the party and country.

"Indeed I am most humbled by the reality that this path of leadership upon
which I am about to traverse was pioneered by the greatest of men, beginning
with the late Datuk Onn Jaafar followed by the late Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al
Haj and then by my beloved father, Tun Abdul Razak.

"He was followed by the late Tun Hussein Onn who was then succeeded by Tun
Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

"Now, the burden carried by Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi will be handed
over to me. And so, in this most trying of times for the party and country, I
bear on my shoulders the enormous responsibility to continue Umno's struggle for
the betterment of the people," he said.

Najib also recorded his personal thanks to each and every Umno member who
have given him their support and also his highest gratitude to the Wanita, Youth
and Puteri wings for their cooperation during his time as party deputy
president.
