SRILANKAN AIRLINES FLIGHTS GO GREEN

KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 (Bernama) -- SriLankan Airlines has become the first
airline in South Asia to make a full and unconditional commitment to
environmental conservation.

In a statement here Tuesday, the airline said it has formed a fuel
efficiency department last July, and has since increased its fuel efficiency by
an average of 3.91 percent per month up to end-January.

"This has climbed to an all-time high of 5.63 percent savings in January
this year," it said.

Its chief executive officer, Manoj Gunawardena, said the airline's
conservation efforts were driven from the bottom up, with the involvement of
every employee.

"In fact, it was the example set by our workforce that led us to the airline
into a full-fledged 'Green Airline'.

"Even our waste recycling programme is being carried out by our main
employee union," he said.

The Green Flight involves a comprehensive range of measures to make each
flight as enviroment-friendly as possible, minimising fuel consumption and
carbon emissions and reducing noise levels.
