MALAYSIAN POLICE MUST STEP UP CAPABILITY

KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 (Bernama) -- The Royal Malaysia Police must step up their
capability in all aspects to strike fear into criminals who are becoming
increasingly sophisticated, Abdullah Ahmad Badawi said Wednesday.

The prime minister said that criminals were becoming highly skilled in
the use of high-technology weapons and equipment and needed to be stopped by the
agility of the police.

"The feeling that criminals can overcome the police must not be allowed to
surface. They must be cowed by police who are more capable and effective in
whatever they do," he said at the 202nd Police Day gathering at the Police
Training Centre here.

Abdullah said the strength and determination of the police in fighting crime
would raise the people's confidence in the police force and at the same time
deter the people from committing crimes.

"Training is very necessary to ensure that the Royal Malaysia Police can be
a force that can ensure peace and security of the people," he said.

Several police officers and personnel as well as civilian staff received
outstanding service awards at the function.

Abdullah also presented the "Friends Of The Police" award to National
Council Of Women's Organisation (NCWO) deputy president Faridah Khalid for her
collaboration with the police in implementating the "Coaliation Of Citizens
Against Crime" programme to combat crime.

Another recipient was Kamal Affandi Hashim, chairman of the Youth
Achievement Committee (Crime Prevention) of the Malaysian Crime Prevention
Foundation,l for his efforts in raising awareness on the safety of self and
property to reduce the incidence of becoming victims.

The prime minister also test drove a police patro MPV, Mitsubishi Evolution
X (Evo-10), fitted with the Command, Control, Communication and Integration
(C4i)) system and presented ex-gratia payments to civil servants hit be
disasters in the line of duty.

A Honda ST 1300 mtorcycle which will be used for escort duty for royalty and
other VIPs and for enforcement duty for the police traffic branch was also
introduced.
