PRUDENT SPENDING BY WOMEN HELPS DURING ECONOMIC CRISIS
KUALA LUMPUR, March 25 (Bernama) -- Women are urged to spend prudently
beginning with the family unit to ensure financial stability for the family
during the current global economic crisis, said Wanita Umno chief
Rafidah Aziz Wednesday.
The United Malays National Organisation, or UMNO is a right-wing party and
Malaysia's largest political party; a founding member of the National Front
(Barisan Nasional -BN) coalition, which has been Malaysia's ruling political
party since independence.
"The Wanita Umno movement itself should complement government efforts in
handling the effects of the global economic crisis, and it can do this beginning
with their respective family unit," she said in her policy speech at the Wanita
Umno delegates conference at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), here.
She also suggested that children were guided not to be choosy concerning
work and to be prepared to gain experience from whatever legitimate jobs during
difficult times.
She said the young generation in Malaysia were refusing to work in sectors
or jobs that were boring, dirty and dangerous.
"The situation is almost like that of the 1970s where the Malaysian
community, especially the Malays, looked down on electrical and electronic
factory workers.
"Those working in such factories were given names such as 'Mat Spanar' and
'Minah Karan'," she said.
However, Rafidah said that the country's economic history had proven that
these young Malaysians had succeeded in building a strong platform for the
government to subsequently implement the National Industrial Policy.
Meanwhile, she hoped the stimulus packages provided by the government would
be beneficially utilised by the target groups during the current financial
crisis, and reminded the delegates to become the communication channel to inform
party members and the public on the packages.
She said the National Front (Barisan Nasional-BN) government had the
experience in facing and successfully tackling several economic crises in the
past.
"Such experience had enabled the government to carry out appropriate
measures to ensure that the people are protected from the negative effects of
the global economic crisis," she added.
