Kota Kinabalu Among Five Locations Hosting APEC 2020 Meetings

KOTA KINABALU (Sabah, Malaysia) March 26 (Bernama) -- Kota Kinabalu, together with Kuala Lumpur, Langkawi, Melaka and Penang, will be hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) 2020 series of meetings from December 2019 to November 2020. This will be Malaysia’s second time hosting the APEC meetings, the first being in 1998. APEC 2020 national secretariat logistics head Suraya K.A. Rahman said the selection of Kota Kinabalu as one of the hosts would be an opportunity to give exposure to Sabah as a top destination for the meetings, incentives, conferences and exhibitions (MICE) industry. “Kota Kinabalu will host the meeting from Sept 1-15, 2020. More than 1,200 delegates from 21 countries are expected at the meeting,” she told reporters after a courtesy visit to Chief Minister Mohd Shafie Apdal here Monday. Also present at the visit was Ministry of International Trade and Industry state director, Mohd Hijri Mat Rani. Suraya said Kota Kinabalu was an attractive tourism destination and they would notify the APEC delegates in advance so that they could bring their family members with them. She added that the APEC meetings would begin in December 2019 in Langkawi before moving on to Kuala Lumpur, Melaka, Penang, Kota Kinabalu and back to Kuala Lumpur again in November 2020. -- BERNAMA
