WALHI MULLING OVER LAW SUIT AGAINST GOVT ON SITU GINTUNG DISASTER

Jakarta, March 29 (ANTARA) - The Indonesian Environmental Watch (Walhi) is considering filing a law suit against the government for ignorance in care and inspecting the condition of Situ Gintung which has eventually caused the sluice gate to collapse, killing many lives.

"Walhi is considering support to the wishes of the victims to file a legal action against Banten province and relevant agencies," a Walhi spokesman, Erwin Usman said through SMS message, on Sunday.

Erwin said the plan to file a law suit against the government is to be made after learning the Situ Gintung disaster which was caused by the government's negligence in applying law No 23/1997 on the management of environment, the law No 7/2004 on water resources and government regulation No 42/2008 on the management of water resources and Law No 24/2007 on the handling of natural resources.

Earlier, Erwin said Walhi asked the government to issue early warning system to the people in the vicinity of Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jabodetabek).

"Early warning system will be immediately brought to solution. Maximally 24 hour the community living in the disaster prone areas have been warned about a possible catastrophy to be faced,"
The government should also revitalize around 200 small lakes in the areas of Jabodetable to accommodate rain water in upper land of the lake.

Erwin saw the government was not serious enough in the management of Situ Gintung as could be seen from warnings from community living near the lake ignored by the government.
