Update - LAKE GINTUNG DEATH TOLL RISES TO 97

Tangerang, March 29 (ANTARA) - The death toll of the Situ Gintung dam in the Cireundeu area southwest of Jakarta which burst in small hours of last Friday, rose to 97 on Sunday evening.

The latest body was found under tree ruins behind the University of Muhammadiyah campus. The victim identified as Rizki (17) with curl hair wearing green undershirt and long trousers.

Earlier, South Tangerang Mayor H Soleh said rescue workers were still searching for about another 102 people who had gone missing after the Situ Gintung sluice gate and embankment collapsed.

He said a total of 368 displaced people were given temporary shelter in a number of places including the medical school of Muhammadiyah University campus.
The dam burst which followed heavy rains last Thursday night had obliterated the 255-meter long section of the dam, allowing water from its 20-hectare lake to rush out and inundate hundreds of houses in its immediate proximity.

The burst occurred at around 2 am local time last Friday, and the first volumes of the unleashed water swept away tens of houses and many of people at a time when they were still sound asleep.

The Situ Gintung dam complex covered a total area of 21 hectares and had a capacity to hold 21 million cubic meters of water.
The dam was built as a water reservoir by the Dutch colonial administration back in 1930.
