S. Korea's construction permits plunge over 20 pct in Feb

SEOUL, March 30 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's construction permits for residential houses plunged in February from a year earlier, affected by a protracted slump in the construction sector and an economic downturn, a government report showed Monday.

According to the report by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs,
construction permits were granted for a total of 10,454 houses last month, down
20.9 percent from a year earlier. Compared with a month ago, however, the figure
was up 11.7 percent.
During the first two months of this year, permission was granted for 19,817
houses, down 41.8 percent from the same period a year ago, the report showed.
The year-on-year decline is attributed to a protracted housing slump and the
economic downturn, which left around 162,000 newly-built homes unsold across the
nation as of the end of January.
