NEW US PRESS ATTACHE PLEASED TO WORK WITH INDONESIAN MEDIA

Jakarta, March 30 (ANTARA) - New US Press Attache, Paul Belmont, said he was pleased to work with the Indonesian mass media and would continue to help promote and maintain the good relations between Indonesia and the United States.

Indonesian mass media are among those in Asia, which enjoy freedom of the press and they are even better than those in Malaysia and Singapore, Paul Belmont told ANTARA here Monday at a reception welcoming him as the new press attache at the US embassy.

Thus, Belmont said, he would try to continue the exchange of journalists between the two countries. "We will continue to send Indonesian journalists to cover events in the United States like the US general elections, and invite US journalists to cover events in Indonesia," he added.

Belmont who has been here since January this year saw that the press in Indonesia could support this archipelagic country to be among the most democratic nations in the world.

In addition, Belmont also said he would continue to help maintain the good relations between the two countries among others by promoting US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's policy on comprehensive partnership with Indonesia.

Clinton visited Indonesia as part of her Asian tour in February this year in the early administration of the US 44th President, Barack Obama who had once lived in Indonesia for several years when he was an elementary school student.

During the visit, she discussed with Indonesian prominent figures from different circles among others education, regional security, environment, trade and health.
Paul Belmont was appointed US press attache at the US embassy in Jakarta in November, 2008, to replace Susan Stahl, who has returned to the US for a new post.
