Update - DEATH TOLL OF SITU GINTUNG TRAGEDY RISES TO 99

Tangerang, Banten, March 31 (ANTARA) - Rescue workers found another body on Tuesday at the location of the Situ Gintung Dam tragedy, increasing the death toll to 99.

Rescue worker Hendri said on Tuesday the body was that of a woman with a belly swollen with swallowed flood water.

"The body was found caught up in bamboo trees with her body jutting out toward the river," Hendri said.

With the finding, the number of dead bodies already found until Tuesday noon in the disaster had reached 99.

Rescue workers were still searching for over 100 persons who had gone missing after the Situ Gintung sluice gate and embankment collapsed on Friday morning last week.

The disaster has displaced a total of 368 people who were given temporary shelter in a number of places.

The dam burst which followed heavy rains the previous day had obliterated the 255-meter long section of the dam, allowing water from its 20-hectare lake to rush out and inundate about 300 houses in its immediate proximity.

The burst occurred at around 2 am local time last Friday, and the first volumes of the unleashed water swept away tens of houses at a time when many people were still sound asleep.

The Situ Gintung dam complex covered a total area of 21 hectares and had a capacity to hold 2.1 million cubic meters of water.
The dam was built as a water reservoir by the Dutch colonial administration back in 1930.***
