Committee for Prisoners’ Rights first meeting held

Manama, May. 2 (BNA): Based on His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s directives, the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR) Committee for Prisoners’ Rights held its first meeting. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Hameed Ahmed Hussain with the participation of Dina Al Ladhi and Rawda Al Aradi. The application of the provisions of Law No. 18 of 2017 regarding penalties and alternative measures, and the reinstatement of the citizenship of 551 convicts, pursuant to article 24 of Law No. 58 of 2006 on the protection of society from terrorist acts, emphasise the keenness of His Majesty the King on protecting society from threats, the meeting said. The committee discussed the activation of its terms of reference under article 35 (a) of the Rules of procedure concerning announced and unannounced visits to reformation centres to monitor human rights and conditions.
