DKP, AGO TO INTENSIFY COOPERATION IN DEALING WITH FISHERY CRIMES

Jakarta, March 31 (ANTARA) - The marine and fisheries ministry (DKP) and the Attorney General`s office (AGO) have agreed to intensify cooperation in dealing with fisheries-related crime.

The agreement was formalized in a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by Marine and Fisheries Minister Freddy Numberi and Attorney General Hendarman Supandji here on Tuesday.

"Fish theft has now become rampant and a regionally organized criminal activity. Therefore, it needs solid cooperation to deal with the crime," Minister Numberi said.

He said the state`s losses from fish poaching had gone down from Rp30 trillion per year. One foreign fishing vessel could poach around 500 tons to 600 tons of fish in Indonesian waters in one operation, he said. The foreign poachers even processed the fish on their boats and immediately sent the catch overseas, he explained.

He hoped the cooperation with AGO could help speed up legal process against fish poachers in Indonesian waters.

Meanwhile, Attorney General Hendarman Supandji said the legal infrastructure should be continuously improved to anticipate legal problems in the fishery field.

The newly signed MOU emphasizes coordination between the marine and fisheries ministry and the Attorney General`s Office in dealing with legal process against fish poaching, joint training and technical courses in the marine and fisheries field, and provision of legal aid and consideration in dealing with fisheries and marine crimes.
