SOME 72 SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS LEAVE FOR JAPAN

Jakarta, March 31 (ANTARA) - Some 72 Indonesian university students will leave for Japan on Wednesday (April 1) to continue their study with scholarships from the Japanese education, science, and technology ministry.

"We note that the number of Indonesians studying in Japan increases annually," Takio Yamada, charge d'affairs of the Japanese embassy, said after a function to send off the Indonesian students here on Tuesday.

Indonesia was in the fourth rank after China, South Korea and Australia in number of students studying in Japan, he said.

Indonesian university students preferred to study in the United States and Australia rather than in Japan, he said.

"We are close to each other, but the number of Indonesian university students willing to study in Japan is relatively small," he said.

The scholarship recipients leaving for Japan on Wednesday include 48 research program students, four graduate program students and 20 non-degree program students.

According to data of the Japanese embassy until May 1, 2008, some 680 of the total 1,791 Indonesian students studying in Japan, were recipients of scholarships from the Japanese government.

The Japanese embassy will open scholarship application registration for Indonesian students for departure in 2010, in April 2009. ***3***
