N SULAWESI GOVERNOR RECEIVES PI PRESIDENTIAL CITATION AWARD

Manila, April 3 (ANTRARA) - Philippine President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo presented a Presidential Citation Award to North Sulawesi Governor Sinyo Harry Sarundajang at Malacanang Palace here on Friday.

President Arroyo presented the Award to Sarundajang at a ceremony attended also by Indonesian Ambassador to the Philippines Irzan Tandjung; Philippine presidential adviser on the Brunei- Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines - East Asia Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) cooperation Gen Efran Abu; and North Sulawesi provincial administration special staff for media and information Freddy Roeroe.

According to Arroyo, the Presidential Citation Award was presented to Sarundajang because of his meritorious services in improving the cooperative relations in various fields between Indonesia and the Philippines, between South Mindanau and North Sulawesi provinces in particular.

Meanwhile, Sarundajang said the cooperative relations were started following the establishment of a Bitung-Davao sister-city relationship in 1993, followed by a Bitung-General Santos sister- city relationship in 1994, and BIMP-EAGA cooperation in the same year when he was the mayor of Bitung municipality.

He said a student exchange program between Bitung and Davao, as well as General Santos, and direct trade between North Sulawesi and the two Philippine cities, were part of the cooperation.

Commenting on the award, Sarundajang said he was thankful to the Philippine government for conferring it on him.

"The award is part of the hard work done by the North Sulawesi people and therefore the Presidential Citation really belongs to the people of the 'land of swaying coconut leaves,'" the governor said.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Ambassador to the Philippines Irzan Tandjung said it was the first time for the Philippines government to present the prestigious award to a provincial governor.

Tandjung said the presentation of the award to the North Sulawesi governor had been reported to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and the head of state was also very proud about it.***
