DAWN OF A NEW ERA FOR MALAYSIA
KOTA KINABALU (Malaysia), April 4 (Bernama) -- Political leaders from East Malaysia states of Sabah and Sarawak have described the appointment of Najib Razak as Malaysia's new prime minister as the dawn of a new era which will take the country to greater heights and achievements.
They are also confident that with Najib at the helm Malaysians will give
him and his cabinet full support to further unite the various races.
Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) president V.K. Liew said that he believed
Najib would implement the changes that "he has promised to take the country to
an even greater heights."
"Najib is championing the concept of a 'One Malaysia' and it is time that we
move on to realise this concept. I am hopeful that united we can do it.
"Let us now discard all this quibbling about this man or the other man, this
race or that race and a race being inferior or superior. Let us discard all this
and unite as one people throughout this land," he told Bernama here Friday.
Liew said: "The fate and greatness of Malaysia is grounded in the principles
enshrined in our Constitution that has served us well since independence.
Together, we can weather storms and bring glory to our country.
"Our future lies with those with good political wisdom and who realise that
the public is interested more in governance than in politics," he said.
Liew said Najib, despite what has been unfairly thrown at him, both inside
and outside Parliament, would rise to the occasion and would prove his critics
wrong.
"I always believe that the measure of a man's strength is at times of
controversy and not during comfortable times," Liew added.
Meanwhile, Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah president (PBRS) Joseph Kurup said
PBRS would give Najib undivided support in his efforts to bring about
development and to promote better harmonious relationships among the
multi-racial and multi-religious people.
"PBRS will give him full support to make his dreams a reality that this
nation will be one united Malaysia," he said.
Kurup said PBRS was confident that with Najib's leadership "this dream would
not be impossible to achieve".
Former Sabah Chief Minister Salleh Said Keruak also welcomed the appointment
of Najib as new Prime Minister saying that "Najib is a capable leader to lead
this country".
He hoped that the Barisan Nasional (BN), under the leadership of Najib,
would continue to be the number one choice of the people, especially in Sabah.
Meanwhile, United Pasokmomogun Kadazandusun Murut Organisation (Upko)
president Bernard Dompok said Najib's appointment was a continuation of the
country's leadership.
"I am confident Najib will continue the national development policies and
improve the government's delivery system so that the government's policies and
promises can be implemented for the target groups.
"The same goes for the "One Malaysia" concept forwarded by Najib. We hope it
can further unite all component parties in the BN besides strengthening racial
ties," he said.
Dompok pledged Upko's full support for Najib in facing any problem
especially the economic situation facing the country.
Meanwhile in LUBOK ANTU in Sarawak, Deputy Chief Minister Alfred Jabu said
today the smooth transition of power from Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and Najib was
proof of Barisan Nasional (BN)'s credibility.
Jabu, who is also Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) deputy president,
said he was happy to see a smooth transition process.
"Sarawak BN pledges to give him a perfect present with a big victory in the
Batang Ai by-election this Tuesday," he told reporters while campaigning for the
ruling National Front (BN) candidate Malcolm Mussen Lamoh at the Lubok Antu
bazaar.
He said the people in Batang Ai, which has 8,006 registered voters, were
very mature and could not be hoodwinked by the opposition.
Mussen from Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) is facing Parti Keadilan Rakyat
(PKR)'s Jawah Gerang in a straight fight following the death of BN incumbent
Dublin Unting Ingkot on Feb 24.
Meanwhile, Sarawak's Planning and Resources Managment Minister II, Amar
Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, was confident that Najib would continue with an
action-orientated administration.
He said Najib had shown his credibility as a deputy prime minister who
ensured development was based on an effective delivery system.
Awang Tengah said Najib had shown his readiness for renewal through
stressing on equal development in the country.
