Pursuing a nuclear strategy made economic sense for Abu Dhabi, says Lady Barbara Judge
Abu Dhabi, 6 April 2009 (WAM) - The need to explore alternative energy sources for the long-term and the knowledge that oil prices will rise again once the world economy revives are two good reasons for Abu Dhabi to push forward with its nuclear project, said the Chairman of the UK Atomic Energy Authority.
"Building a nuclear power plant has a long lead time, and we need to think about nuclear projects now, so that this form of energy is available when we need it," said Lady Barbara Judge. "Today's times are very difficult, but prudent governments look to tomorrow's needs." In an exclusive interview with Oxford Business Group (OBG), the highly acclaimed global publishing, research and consultancy firm, Lady Judge said that pursuing a nuclear strategy made economic sense for Abu Dhabi, despite its emphasis on oil production. If Abu Dhabi uses nuclear power for domestic consumption, she said, the country could sell more of its oil profitably on the international market.
The interview will feature in The Report: Abu Dhabi 2009, the most comprehensive and accurate review of the country's economy available, which is soon to be published by OBG. Rated as the premier source of information for foreign direct investment into the country's economy, it will be a vital guide to the many facets of Abu Dhabi, including its macroeconomics, infrastructure, political landscape, banking and sectoral developments.
The Report: Abu Dhabi 2009 has been produced by a team of OBG analysts based in Abu Dhabi who conducted some two hundred interviews with leading political and economic figures. Lady Judge is one of the experts interviewed in The Report: Abu Dhabi 2009, where the full version of her interview will appear.
Lady Judge has high praise for Abu Dhabi's policy of taking the lead in renewable technology and the practices it has adopted to ensure the highest standards are met in its nuclear power project. She points out that Abu Dhabi has taken all the right steps to secure the right institutional framework, resources and expertise to sustain its energy policy. "Since the White Paper was published in March 2008, I have seen the emirate adopt every recognised best practice to build a leading nuclear power plant in 2017," she said.
Lady Judge believes that Abu Dhabi's stable political situation and geographical position combine to make it one of the best-placed locations in the world to develop nuclear energy. Not only does the country have plenty of undeveloped areas where a nuclear power plant can be set up, but it has taken steps to expand education facilities by building a new university. This, together with further investment in essential skills training, will help to develop local talent to run the project, she said.
Available in print form and online, The Report: Abu Dhabi 2009 will be part of the range of OBG's publications renowned as leading sources of information on developing and emerging economies around the world.
