PRESS EXPECTED TO ACT AS AGENT OF PEACE IN ACEH

Banda Aceh, April 6 (ANTARA) - Nanggroe Aceh Darussalam (NAD) Vice Governor Muhammad Nazar has expressed hope that the press in the province could act as an agent of peace so that the region could develop in a situation of lasting peace.

"We hope the press will not be a small fire that can burn a big forest," Nazar said at a function to open a workshop on "Election Familiarization and Journalistic-based Voters Education toward Election and Elegance" here on Monday.

The vice governor on the occasion asserted that Aceh was still in a sensitive transitional period after years of armed conflict, devastating tsunami, and the Helsinki peace agreement between the government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM).

"Do not instigate. Only a small and simple event in Aceh will have the potential to create a big problem that can come in the spotlight of domestic and international media," Nazar said.

He added that Aceh could be illustrated as a hayfield which was easily ignited, and therefore all parties there should make every effort to keep and maintain the ongoing peace and serenity in the province.

Commenting on outdoor election campaign rallies that ended on April 5 in the province, Nazar said they had run smoothly despite various acts of intimidation and even the murder of a party activist, a provincial official said.

"The acts of intimidation during the campaign period were part of certain people's efforts to obstruct the elections and peace process in Aceh," NAD Vice Governor Muhammad Nazar said.

But the security agencies would certainly investigate the the acts of intimidations and violence, he added.

Nazar expressed hope that people in Aceh would use their right to vote freely and without any fear on polling day April 9.

He called on political party supporters and sympathizers as well as legislative candidates in the province to remember that winnong or losing in elections was something normal and that therefore they should accept whatever the results of the polls were.
The upcoming legislative election on April 9, 2009 in Aceh will be participated in by more than 10,000 legislative candidates from the election participating parties and individuals.
