East, West to come together at Seoul international music fest

SEOUL, April 7 (Yonhap) -- Musicians from in and out of Korea will gather in
Seoul next month at the city's first international music festival under the theme
"All Together in Music," the event's organizers said Tuesday.
The Seoul International Music Festival (SIMF), organized by the Korea Foundation,
will run from May 22 through 30 at four major art halls in Seoul, featuring
composers, music directors and musicians spanning Poland's Krzysztof Penderecki,
Maestro Ralf Gothoni of the English Chamber Orchestra and Finnish cellist Arto
Noras.
The "Emperor Piano Trio," formed in 2001 by Korean violinist Kim So-ock, Chinese
cellist Li Wei and Japanese pianist Naomi Iwase, will perform for Korean
audiences for the first time.
The festival will open with a joint performance by violinists Aiman
Mussakhajayeva from the Palestinian territories and Roy Shiloah from Israel.
The closing performance will be presented by the Polish orchestra led by
Penderecki and Korean musicians, commemorating the 20th anniversary of
Korea-Poland ties and the composer's 75th birthday.
Organizers plan to expand its size and establish it as an annual event, SIMF art
director Ryu Jae-joon said.
