Man found guilty of murdering student

The parents of a Chinese student murdered on her way home from a cleaning job will
be thankful a jury has found a man guilty of her killing, a family friend says.
The mother and father of Jiao Dan, 22, were too ill to travel from China's Hunan
Province to hear the Supreme Court jury's verdict on Tuesday against Dannie Adam
Wright, 36, for the murder of their daughter.
They had travelled to Perth for the trial in October last year but the hearing was
adjourned because of delays in the preparation of forensic evidence, including DNA
samples.
Wright was found not guilty of wilful murder but guilty of Jiao Dan's murder on
October 8, 2007, metres from a house she shared with a friend.
The jury, which had retired on Monday, also found him guilty of sexual penetration
with a bottle.
Wright was removed from the court by court security officers after swearing
repeatedly on hearing the verdict.
"You're all f....d," he shouted from the dock.
"Get me out of here. I've had enough of this s**t.
"I shouldn't be here in the first place."
Ms Dan, a university student, had disembarked from a train at the Stirling train
station after 11pm (WDT) on the night of her murder.
During the trial prosecutors alleged Wright bashed, strangled and sexually assaulted
her before leaving her to die on a grass verge in Innaloo, in Perth's northern
suburbs.
Wright's lawyer said his client was not the killer.
Min Ding, a Chinese student who studied with Ms Dan at Edith Cowan University, told
reporters outside the court that Jiao Dan had been "wonderful person" and a good
student with many friends.
"On behalf of Jiao Dan's parents I am glad this is ordeal is over and the truth has
come out, that justice has been done," she said.
"What happened to Jiao Dan should never happen to any woman or any girl.
"It has indeed, ruined the whole family.
"The parents borrowed money to pay for her student fees, that is why Jiao Dan worked
part-time as a cleaner.
"We do hope this person who did this be put away for the maximum time possible, to
protect other women from him because, if he is loose, no-one is safe.
"We hope and pray no one will ever suffer like this."
Detective Senior-Sergeant Paul Boult, of Stirling Police, said it was the most
violent murder he had investigated.
He said while Wright had a criminal history and had been released from jail the day
before the crime, "his criminal antecedents did not indicate this type of violent
sexual behaviour".
"Jiao Dan's mother has taken this badly as you would expect and is not well, and the
father, certainly, this has affected him gravely," he said.
"Hopefully, this will give them some solace."
