FLOODS INUNDATING HUNDREDS OF HOUSES IN W SUMATRA

Padang Pariaman, W Sumatra, Apr 10 (ANTARA) - Floods inundated hundreds of houses in Padang Pariaman district and Pariaman municipality in West Sumatra on Friday following overnight downpours.

The water level reached up to 2 meters in the worst-hit area but the flood water began to recede on Friday morning, local residents and government officials said.

The floods also carried away hundreds of livestock and inundated hundreds of hectares of paddy field.

At least 40 houses at Nagari Kurai Taji in Nan Sabaris subdistrict were submerged by 2-meter flood water due to the overflowing of Batang Mangoi river.

The floods spread to neighboring Nagari Sanur and Nagari Padang Bintungan, inundating tens of houses and destroying irrigation networks.

The local authorities have fielded a team of rescue workers to flood-stricken areas to help flood victims.

"We sent a team of rescue workers to the flood-hit areas on Thursday night. There is no report of casualties. And the flood water has begun to recede," the secretary of the West Sumatra natural disaster mitigation task force, Ade Edward, said.
