TANDOORI STOVE USED TO SMUGGLE KETAMINE TO MALAYSIA By P. Vijian

CHENNAI, April 11 (Bernama) -- Indian traffickers continue to use indigenous ways to smuggle ketamine out of the country but they are no match for the authorities' enforcement barrier.

Just a day after the Chennai Customs Department foiled an attempt to smuggle
15kg of ketamine to Malaysia, by stashing them among Hindu idols, authorities
busted another consignment also destined for Kuala Lumpur.

Hoping to dupe airport officials, the suspects used a courier company in
Guummidipundi, an industrial town about 45km from Chennai, to export 15kg of
ketamine to Malaysia.

Written on the courier docket was the receiver's name -- a restaurant in
Kuala Lumpur -- but no further details were available as the consignment was
shipped using a special exporter's code.

"The ketamine was hidden inside a tandoori cooking pot. The pot comes with a
gas burner and underneath we found a stainless steel box, where there were 14
polythene packets of ketamine," a Directorate Revenue Intelligence (DRI)
official, who is familiar with the investigation told Bernama.

An official from the DRI, an elite anti-smuggling government agency, spotted
the bulky stove at the Chennai Airport air complex cargo terminal and decided to
dismantle the package.

The contraband was estimated to be worth about RM1.5 million in the
international market.

According to the officer, no suspect was picked up as the information given
by the sender was false, but investigations was still on.

India is becoming a major supplier of Ketamine, a veterinarian anaesthetic,
now commonly abused as a party drug by youngsters.
