UAE hosts meeting on IHL
The UAE relief organizations, led by the UAE Red Crescent, are reaching out to people in need in Asia, Africa and Europe, a senior UAE diplomat said yesterday.
''The UAE humanitarian agencies are playing spectacular vital role in easing suffering of victims of wars and disasters around the world irrespective of their sex, colour, or religious, political and intellectual affiliations, said Dr. Abdul Rahim Al Awadi, Assistant Foreign Ministry Undersecretary for Legal, Media and Research Affairs.
He was speaking before the second national session on International Humanitarian Law (IHL) for Diplomats and Judicial Staff, organized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in association with the Emirates Center for Strategic Studies and Research and coordination with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The session focused on promoting IHL. It offered basic knowledge of IHL, including its definition, sources, bases and mechanisms for implementation. It also referred to specific cases and practical applications, which enabled participants to make use of relevant legal texts and apply IHL in their work.
In addition, relevant aspects of Human Rights Law and International Criminal Law and Judiciary were also covered. Further, the role of the ICRC during armed conflicts was also addressed.
This course is intended to benefit diplomats and judicial staff, who confront IHL-related situations on an almost daily basis. The conference has assembled an elite group of senior researchers, experts, and consultants in International Humanitarian Law.
