LOCAL VARSITY DEVELOPS LARGEST DATABASE ON MALAY HERITAGE BUILDINGS

KUALA LUMPUR, April 15 (Bernama) -- A local university, Universiti Teknologi
Malaysia (UTM), has developed the largest database on the country's heritage
buildings to act as guidelines for authorities charged with conserving and
retaining their original designs.

Vice Chancellor Prof Dr Zaini Ujang said this followed the university's
success in collecting detailed drawings of 400 Malay heritage buildings
nationwide.

"They are compiled in books amd documented in CDs to make them accessible to
the public," he said here Tuesday.

The drawings documented are that of traditional houses, palaces, mosques,
shophouses, colonial buildings, temples, schools, railways stations, private
houses and government buildings.

Dr Zaini said the project which began ten years ago was undertaken by
lecturers and students from the Malay World Architecture Research Centre (KALAM)

He said the government via the Information, Communication, Arts and Culture
Ministry has recognised the research documents by buying 61 reports and detailed
drawings of heritage buildings.

The National Museum and the state museums of southern states of Negeri
Sembilan and Melaka, and east coast state of Terengganu had also bought the
drawings to be displayed for public viewing.
