Over three quarters of Japanese born after World War II: census+
TOKYO, April 16 Kyodo - The estimated number of people who were born on or after Aug. 15, 1945, the day Japan was defeated in World War II, has exceeded three-fourths of the entire Japanese population for the first time, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and
Communications said Thursday.
The population in that bracket has reached 96,456,000, accounting for 75.5
percent of the total Japanese population of 127,692,000, according to the
estimates as of Oct. 1, 2008.
The total population decreased 0.06 percent from a year earlier, marking the
first drop in three years.
People aged 75 or older numbered 13,218,000, forming 10.4 percent of the entire
population, according to the census.
Of Japan's 47 prefectures, Tokyo holds the largest population among the 47
prefectures with 12,838,000, topping 10 percent of the entire population for
two years in a row.
The population grew from the previous year in Tokyo and six other prefectures,
while it decreased from the year before in 40 prefectures.
The prefectures that saw population growth besides Tokyo were Aichi, Shiga,
Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama and Okinawa prefectures.
The ministry has formulated the estimates on the basis of the 2005 census and
the data include foreign workers and students who stayed in the country for 91
days or longer.
