DON'T BE LIKE THE SITCOM "YES MINISTER", SAYS DEPUTY SPEAKER

KUALA LUMPUR, April 17 (Bernama) -- The Lower House of Parliament Deputy Speaker Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar wants the new Cabinet line-up to truly understand the functions and responsibilities of their respective portfolios so that they would not be likened to the minister in the sitcom programme, "Yes Minister".

He said when ministers and deputy ministers were appointed, they were
perceived to be qualified for the job by having vast knowledge on their
responsibilities.

"They (ministers and deputy ministers) must not be complacent once they have
been appointed to the post. It's like now you don't need to know anything
because your officers will do everything.

"Such ministers will be like the popular sitcom series in England, 'Yes
Minister' where the minister does not know anything and only depends on his
officers," he said. "Yes Minister" was a popular sitcom series in England in the
1980's.

Wan Junaidi said this to reporters after receiving a courtesy call by the
Palestinian Ambassador to Malaysia Abdelaziz Aboughosh at his office in
Parliament House, here Friday.

He said in-depth knowledge of the ministries by the respective ministers
could help them in answering questions raised by members of Parliament at the
Lower House of Parliament sitting.

"We don't want a situation where a minister cannot answer a question posed
by any member of Parliament...shameful for the minister or deputy minister. I
too am ashamed when sitting on the Speaker's chair as I have to listen to it,"
he said.

However, he expressed confidence that the new Cabinet line-up, especially
the first-timers, were capable of discharging their duty well.

Commenting on Aboughosh's visit, Wan Junaidi said the Muslim community in
the country who supported the Palestinian cause against Israel should not look
at the internal conflict between Fatah and Hamas as one of the causes of the
uncertainties in the region.
