CHINESE KEEN TO KNOW ABOUT LIBERALISATION OF EQUITY OWNERSHIP

From Zuriati Zulmi

BEIJING, April 24 (Bernama) -- Chinese investors have expressed the desire
to learn more about the liberalisation of equity ownership in certain Malaysian
services sub-sectors.

"This is a new and good decision. I hope this news will be made known to
others in China and they (investors) will grab the opportunities given by the
Malaysian government," said Shao Qi Wei, chairman of the China National Tourism
Association (CNTA) after Malaysian Tourism Minister Dr Ng Yen Yen had
called on him at his office here Friday.

Dr Ng is on a tourism promotion mission to China.

Shao invited Malaysian delegations to conduct seminars and talks and hold
news conferences in China to explain the liberalisation of the equity ownership.

Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak had announced on
Wednesday the removal of 30 per cent Bumiputera equity quota for 27 services
sub-sectors, including tourism.

The move is aimed at creating a conducive business environment to attract
more investments, bring in more professionals and technology, encourage
competitiveness and create higher value employment opportunities.

Dr Ng invited the Chinese to invest in Malaysia, saying the removal of the
quota had opened opportunities for more Chinese investors to participate in
Malaysia's tourism industry.

"I hope that after the prime minister's announcement, there will be more
investors from China coming to Malaysia. We are also looking forward to finding
other ways to improve the tourism industry in both Malaysia and China,
especially during the current economic downturn," she said.

Dr Ng also said that Najib would visit China in June, adding that the visit
was considered significant because both countries would be celebrating the 35
years of Malaysia-China relations which started when Najib's father, the late
Abdul Razak Hussein, became the first Malaysian leader to make an official
visit to China when he was the country's second prime minister.

"He (Najib) is supposed to visit China at the end of May but has
postponed it (to June) due to his tight schedule," she said. Tun Razak had made
the China visit on May 28, 1974.
