ASEAN RECEIVES AMBASSADOR OF LUXEMBOURG

By Mohd Nasir Yusoff

JAKARTA, April 25 (Bernama) -- ASEAN on Friday received the Ambassador of
Luxembourg Marc Ungeheuer, the 12th ambassador from the European Union (EU)
member state, who presented his letter of appointment to ASEAN Secretary-General
Dr Surin Pitsuwan.

In welcoming Ungeheuer, Surin said Luxembourg was one of the six founding
members of the EU back in 1957, and could play a key role in enhancing the
ASEAN-EU relationship.

"I am positive the appointment of Ambassador Ungeheuer will create a large
space for experience-sharing between Luxembourg, EU and ASEAN on community
building.

"We are now expanding and deepening our cooperation with the EU as a
whole," he said in a statement here.

As stipulated in the ASEAN Charter, non-ASEAN countries may accredit
ambassadors to ASEAN.

As a dialogue partner of ASEAN, EU has announced that each of the 27 EU
member states shall appoint an ambassador to ASEAN and that the European
Commission has already accredited its ambassador to ASEAN.
