UAE keen on diversifying energy resources
Ashgabat - April 26, 2009 (WAM) - The UAE is keenly interested in diversifying energy resources as well as in adopting renewables as the major source of its energy in spite of the fact that it possesses around 10 per cent of the world's oil reserves, said Minister of Economy Sultan Al Mansouri.
The UAE's leadership is interested in these efforts, he said, adding that Abu Dhabi's Masdar City, the world's first zero-carbon city, is part of the UAE's policy to use clean and environment-friendly energy to meet at least seven per cent of its energy needs by 2020, creating a US$6 billion to US$7 billion market in the next 10 years.
Al Mansouri was addressing a high-level international conference dedicated to the question of safe international energy supply.
The conference, which convened in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, is being hosted by the government of Turkmenistan. It has brought together oil and energy ministers and officials from around the world.
The UAE minister also called for stringent and speedy actions to counter the challenge posed by pirate attacks on oil tankers in the Gulf of Aden, the critical passage way of a great percentage of the world's oil shipments.
He said international laws must be developed to protect the passage of energy products through the lands of many countries in light of the lack of trust in the current global systems. He also stressed the need to protect the energy sector from the impact of the current financial crisis to maintain its role as one of the pillars of the world economy.
Al Mansouri said renewable energy must be kept among the prioritised items on the world agenda even in view of the economic crisis.
